Using Drama to Explore Narrative Poetry at KS2
ABOUT THIS EVENT
Drama enables whole classes of children to inter-actively enter and explore any narrative poem together. Drama strategies can be used to help them re-create and enter the various settings and engage with the thoughts, motives, feelings and actions of characters, during key moments and scenes. Drama can bring alive the poet’s words, phrases, images and sounds, in meaningful, embodied and memorable ways. It can even provide additional scenes, which can then be inserted into the poem!
This session will focus on The Pied Piper of Hamelin by Robert Browning. Teachers will be taken ‘step by step’ through a KS2 drama lesson. Each teacher move and drama strategy will be explained, in terms of its intended impact on the children’s learning. The ways in which ‘Teacher in Role’ is being used, will also be explained.

Patrice Baldwin was a primary headteacher, School Improvement and Art Education Adviser and Ofsted inspector. She was Sir Jim Rose’s Drama Editorial Expert for his proposed primary curriculum.
Patrice has given keynotes and led workshops in 35+ countries and was President of the International Drama Theatre and Education Association (2010-13) and Chair of National Drama for more than a decade (until 2015). She created and directed ‘Drama for Learning and Creativity’ (D4LC), an internationally acclaimed school improvement initiative.
Patrice is a published educational author and has been a BBC Education scriptwriter and series consultant (TV and Radio). She now works freelance.
