Using Drama for Oracy

ABOUT THE COURSE

Drama provides stimulating contexts for supporting and developing oracy across the curriculum. Drama Strategies can be used as ‘thought and talk frames’, to intentionally support different types of talk, for a range of purposes and audiences. The role of the teacher as a model, co-talker, facilitator and provocateur will also be considered.

PARTICIPANTS WILL

• Learn how to introduce Drama and Talk protocols (contracts), with whole classes
• Learn some new drama strategies and revisit familiar strategies, to consider what they offer as ‘Talk Frames’
• Consider how shared, imagined contexts, can be used with intent, to shift the linguistic demands on children
• Consider the changing role/s and functions of the teacher in drama lessons, (where oracy is a main focus)
• Learn how to plan a KS2 drama lesson, with an oracy focus.
• Consider their possible ‘next step.

Patrice Baldwin was a primary headteacher, School Improvement and Art Education Adviser and Ofsted inspector. She was Sir Jim Rose’s Drama Editorial Expert for his proposed primary curriculum.

Patrice has given keynotes and led workshops in 35+ countries and was President of the International Drama Theatre and Education Association (2010-13) and Chair of National Drama for more than a decade (until 2015). She created and directed ‘Drama for Learning and Creativity’ (D4LC), an internationally acclaimed school improvement initiative.

Patrice is a published educational author and has been a BBC Education scriptwriter and series consultant (TV and Radio). She now works freelance.
