Using ‘Drama for Learning’ techniques with Picture Books – Session 1 – KS1
ABOUT THIS EVENT
This event is ‘paired’ with Using ‘Drama for Learning’ techniques with Picture Books – Session 2 – KS2 on Tuesday 24 May 2022 4-5.30pm. Teachers may choose to register for just one session but it is recommended that teachers attend both sessions and try out some of the Session 1 activities before Session 2. Book both sessions on this booking form only.
ABOUT THE COURSE
High quality picture books can be approached through ‘whole class Drama’, in ways that enable shared, memorable learning opportunities. Drama strategies can be used to bring images and texts alive, to meet and become characters and to enter situations and key moments together in role (often with the teacher in role too). Through Drama children can explore the relationships, situations, emotions and significant universal themes within the books and make worthwhile connections between fiction and real life.
Teachers who are attending both KS1 and KS2 sessions will be encouraged to try out some drama strategies between sessions. There will be an opportunity (optional) for teachers to feedback on any drama they have tried out between sessions, to ask questions and to get further advice.
SESSION 1 (KS1): This session will explain some important drama strategies and use them with ‘The Tunnel’ by Anthony Brown. The lesson will be explained ‘step by step’ and will explore the images, text and the inter-play between them. The drama will also help children to actively explore family, sibling relationships, the settings and the key moments.
SESSION 2 (KS2): This session will focus on ‘The Island’ by Armin Greder. The approach and the drama strategy choices will be explained ‘step by step’ in a drama lesson which will use both text and images to explore migration, evacuation, community responses, global responsibilities, actions and consequences.
- Learn some new and flexible drama strategies for use with picture books;
- Consider what picture books might contain, that works well with a ‘Drama for Learning’ approach and get some recommended titles;
- Follow a KS1 picture book/drama lesson, with the teacher moves and strategies explained (in relation to the intended learning):

- A Drama Strategies booklet;
- A Drama Contract;
- A copy of the session Powerpoint (as a PDF);
- The lesson plan from the session;
- An additional lesson plan for each session attended;
- A relevant published article for each session attended.
One session: £25 for 1 teacher; £15 for each additional teacher (from the same school)
Two sessions: £40 for 1 teacher ; £30 for each additional teacher (from the same school)
Individual teachers may book places on this course, (which is hosted by National Drama).

Patrice Baldwin was a primary headteacher, School Improvement and Art Education Adviser and Ofsted inspector. She was Sir Jim Rose’s Drama Editorial Expert for his proposed primary curriculum.
Patrice has given keynotes and led workshops in 35+ countries and was President of the International Drama Theatre and Education Association (2010-13) and Chair of National Drama for more than a decade (until 2015). She created and directed ‘Drama for Learning and Creativity’ (D4LC), an internationally acclaimed school improvement initiative.
Patrice is a published educational author and has been a BBC Education scriptwriter and series consultant (TV and Radio). She now works freelance.
